What to eat before going to the gym in the morning

If you are going to the gym before work you maybe know the problem: “Should I eat something before going to the gym?”, “What can I eat before?”.

It is said to not be a good idea to go to the gym with a full stomach, neither with an empty. In the articles I read it usually says that there should be a break of at least 1 – 1,5 hours between eating and doing exercises. If you wake up early to go to the gym before work you can most probably not wait for that long.

The first few days after signing up I went straight to the gym without eating anything after getting up in the morning. For a few days it was totally fine but after a while I felt like I don’t have any energy to keep up anymore. What I then realised were 2 important things:

  1. my energy in the morning was much better when I ate a rich dinner the day before. I usually eat late lunch and then an afternoon snack (called Merienda here in Spain), so by the time I get home I am usually not hungry at all and many times I skipped the dinner because I go to bed early anyways. That’s not a good idea! After a while I just prepared dinner even when I didn’t feel hungry but in the end I always enjoy it a lot and the day after I feel more energized.
  2. when I eat a little snack in the morning like a banana or any kind of fruit or cereals bar etc. I feel better as well. It indeed is important to eat something before.

When you are at the gym and you feel like you cannot continue with the exercises or all of a sudden you feel like throwing up, it is probably because you are missing some energy in form of food (and also drink water while at the gym!). Every person is different so what you should do is try some different things and after a while I am sure you will be able to figure out what works best for you. What works best for me is to eat greek yogurt with oats and a fruit (mostly banana) after getting up and to never skip my dinner when going to the gym the next day.
